What goes in it?

Tap water. Nothing else goes in it, ever, and that is not a disclaimer tucked away at the bottom of the page: it is the single most important line here. This heats water and turns it into warm steam. Anything else you put in the tank is something you would then be breathing in, and no amount of it being sold for that purpose makes it a good idea. Water in, steam out, and that is the whole machine.

What does it actually do?

It warms plain water until it becomes soft steam, and the mask puts that steam in front of your nose and mouth instead of letting it drift across the room. That is genuinely all it does. It is not a treatment and it does not replace anything a professional has given you. What it is good for is dry indoor air, winter heating, and the evenings when sitting still and breathing warm steam for a few minutes makes the next hour easier.

Can children use it?

Only with an adult sitting with them, holding the mask, for the whole time. This heats water, so the unit, the water and the steam are all hot, and a child left alone with it is a burn waiting to happen. Never leave it running unattended, never use it on someone asleep, and keep the cable and the unit back from the edge of the table.

How long does it run, and then what?

A few minutes at a time is the usual session, and you stop when you have had enough rather than running it down to empty. Afterwards, tip out the water that is left, rinse the parts that touch the water and the mask, and leave everything to dry in the open. Water left standing in a warm tank overnight is how these things start to smell, and that is the whole of the maintenance.

What people are saying

4.8 out of 5. Individual experiences may vary

Fill, press, done. No filters to order, nothing to replace. It has lived on the shelf since November.

Ten minutes on the sofa with this and the evening went from awful to normal. That is all I wanted.

Quiet enough that I can use it in the same room without waking anyone. That was the whole reason I bought it.

Sound familiar?

If the heating has been on since October and everyone wakes up dry...

The air indoors is bone dry

Radiators on, windows shut, and by February the whole house breathes like a suitcase.

The humidifier never gets used

It needs filling, filtering and forty minutes before the room changes. So it sits in the cupboard.

Nobody is going to settle

It is nine at night, everyone is up, and you want something you can do in the next five minutes.

Water In, Steam Out. That Is the Whole Machine.

What goes in it, what it takes to run and what it takes to keep. Individual experiences may vary.

I'm constantly traveling, and I take it with me everywhere; it's extremely practical and has come in handy more than once.

Questions, answered

Everything you might be wondering

01What can I put in it?
Tap water. Nothing else goes in it, at any time, for any reason. We are putting this first because it is the most important thing on the page and because half this category is sold with a wink about what else you could add. The reasoning fits in one sentence: whatever goes in the tank is what you are going to be breathing, and water is the only thing in the house that belongs in a pair of lungs. If the water where you live is very hard, use filtered or distilled water instead, which is about limescale in the machine rather than about what you breathe.
02What does it do, and what does it not do?
It heats plain water until it turns into soft warm steam, and the mask holds that steam in front of your nose and mouth rather than letting it wander off across the room. That is the whole mechanism and we are not going to dress it up. It is not a treatment, it does not replace anything a professional has given anyone in your house, and if someone needs something specific then this is not the device for that and we would rather lose the order than let you think otherwise. Where it earns its place is ordinary and useful: dry indoor air in winter, a house with the heating on since October, and the evenings when five minutes of warm steam makes the next hour easier to get through.
03Can children use it?
Only with an adult sitting beside them, holding the mask, for the entire session, and never for a child who is asleep or drifting off. This machine heats water: the unit gets hot, the water in it is hot and the steam coming out is hot. A child alone with it is a burn, not a maybe. Keep it back from the edge of the table, keep the cable out of reach, never leave it running while you go to another room, and put it away out of reach once it has cooled and dried. For a very small child, ask a professional whether it is appropriate at all before you use it.
04How do I use it, and for how long?
Fill it with plain water to the line, switch it on and give it about a minute. Sit down, hold the mask comfortably in front of your nose and mouth without pressing it against your face, and breathe normally rather than deeply. A few minutes is a session. Stop when you have had enough rather than running it until it is empty, and stop straight away if the steam feels too hot, if you feel lightheaded, or if anything feels wrong. It is not a machine you get more out of by using for longer.
05How do I clean it?
After every single use, and it takes a minute. Unplug it, let it cool, tip out any water left in the tank, then rinse the tank and the mask under the tap and leave both out in the open to dry completely before you put anything away. Do not store it with water in it and do not put it back in a cupboard damp. Water sitting in a warm tank is the reason these machines start to smell and the reason people stop using them, and both of those are avoidable in sixty seconds.
06Does it need filters or refills?
No. There is no filter, no cartridge, no pad and no consumable of any kind, so there is nothing to reorder and nothing to forget to reorder. You buy it once, you put water in it, and the only thing it ever asks of you is a rinse. That is deliberate: a machine with a subscription attached to it ends up in a cupboard the first month somebody forgets to renew it.
07How does the guarantee work?
